Imaging the Biomechanical Properties of Articular Cartilage
نویسنده
چکیده
Function: The primary function of articular cartilage is mechanical: under load it must deform to distribute the load over a larger area so as to minimize stress in the underlying bone. In addition, articular cartilage must provide a very low friction surface for gliding when the joint is flexed so that articulating joints move freely. Lastly, it must carry out these two functions for a lifetime of use. Understanding the biomechanics of articular cartilage is important as it provides insight into the deterioration occurring in osteoarthritis and other degenerative diseases of joints.

Comparison of fresh osteochondral autografts and allografts: a canine model.
BACKGROUND Osteochondral autografts and allografts have been widely used in the treatment of isolated grade IV articular cartilage lesions of the knee. However, the authors are not aware of any study that has prospectively compared fresh osteochondral autografts to fresh allografts with regard to imaging, biomechanical testing, and histology. HYPOTHESIS The imaging, biomechanical properties, ...
متن کاملIn-situ Response Measurement of Degenerated Articular Cartilage to the Loading in 3-T MRI
The aim of this study was to assess the changes in MRI parameters during applied load directly in MR scanner and correlate these changes with biomechanical parameters of human articular cartilage. Cartilage explants from patients who underwent total knee replacement were examined in the micro-imaging system in 3-T scanner. Concerning MRI parameters, T1 withoutand T1 with contrast agent as a mar...
متن کاملBiomechanical Properties of Articular Cartilage Pericellular Matrix Measured in situ via Atomic Force Microscopy
INTRODUCTION: Articular cartilage is the connective tissue lining the articulating surfaces of diarthrodial joints, providing a low-friction, load bearing surface during joint motion. Articular cartilage consists of a single cell type, chondrocytes, embedded within an extensive extracellular matrix (ECM). The chondrocytes are surrounded by a narrow region called the pericellular matrix (PCM) th...
متن کاملImmunofluorescence-guided atomic force microscopy to measure the micromechanical properties of the pericellular matrix of porcine articular cartilage.
The pericellular matrix (PCM) is a narrow region that is rich in type VI collagen that surrounds each chondrocyte within the extracellular matrix (ECM) of articular cartilage. Previous studies have demonstrated that the chondrocyte micromechanical environment depends on the relative properties of the chondrocyte, its PCM and the ECM. The objective of this study was to measure the influence of t...
متن کاملBiomechanical Properties of Synovial Fluid in/Between Peripheral Zones of Articular Cartilage
The properties and behaviour of articular cartilage (AC) have been studied from numerous aspects. A number of biomechanical models of the properties and behaviour of AC are available today. The traditional model presents cartilage as homogeneous, isotropic and biphase material (Armstrong et al., 1984). There also exist models of transversally isotropic biphase cartilage material (Cohen et al., ...
